The Philadelphia F. C., comprised mostly of former Bethlehem Steel players, many of which have continued their residence in this city, need one more victory to cinch the honors in the newly-organized American Soccer League. The Phillies have only three more games to play before finishing their schedule and then, if successful in winning the title, are in line for a game against the Scullin F. C. of St. Louis, winners of the National Cup championship. The latter match will decide the real soccer championship particularly as the Phillies, owing to their splendid showing in the American League series are recognized by soccer critics as Eastern champions.
New York F. C. is the closest rival to the Phillies. The Quakers, however, have a fairly comfortable lead, having a three point bulge and one game in hand. They have only three more games to play before finishing their schedule.
Harold Brittan, who in the days of the Bethlehem F. C. thrilled the spectators with his sensational work on the Bethlehem Steel field, is leading in t he score. This honor he has achieved despite his prolonged layoff in midseason through a leg injury. He has 26 goals to date with Hemingsley, of Harrison, his closest rival only 14. Whitey Fleming is third with 13 goals. Of the 66 goals counted by the Phillies, Brittan and Fleming have scored 39. Their total is more than the entire team of the Falcos, Fall River and Coats, and is almost as many as those scored by the Todds and Harrison teams.
Following is the standings of the teams, together with the leading goal scorers and a comparison of scoring with Todd Shipyard eleven. The comparison of the latter is made since Todd's won their way to the final of the National Cup championship in the East and then journeyed to St. Louis and were defeated by Scullins:
