In meeting the Ulster United the Steel Workers clash with a team of class and one of the strongest booting elevens in Canada. Recently on a tour of the Scottish team to Canada, a club that played twenty games with but a single defeat, the team to set back the tourists was the Ulster United.
Practice started last week and although the Bethlehem players still have a far way to go to be in the best of condition, the management is confident that the club will make a formidable showing against the Canadians. Several of the Bethlehem players have yet to report, but are expected back in the fold no later than Friday morning. These players include Jim Barrie, Willie Reed and several others who visited in Scotland and Ireland during the summer and are on high seas en route to America.
Several new players will be included in the list of the Steel Workers for the coming season although the majority of the regulars of the last several seasons have been retained. Among the newcomers on the forward line will be James McConnell, a center forward, secure late last season from one of the New England clubs but who has not yet seen actual service with the league champions. Other new players on the forward line are Cecil Burness, an inside and outside left, last year with Brooklyn, and James O'Neil, a twenty-four year old youngster who starred with Dundee and Dunserling clubs, first division Scottish teams.
James McMeekin, a former Greenock-Morton fullback, is another newcomer to the local ranks as is John Geudert, a goalie with the New York Giants last season and who performed sensationally in all of the games against the Bethlehem team.
The players signed for this season as announced today are as follows:
Forwards -- John Jaap, Archie Stark, Tom Gillespie, James McConnell, Malcolm Goldie, John Granger, John Rollo, Cecil Burness, James O'Neil.
Halfbacks -- Robert McDonald, William Carnihan, Robert MacGregor, Willie Reid.
Fullbacks -- James Barrie, William Allen, James McMeekin.
Goal -- Dave Edwards, John Geudert.
