The American Soccer League will open for the season's campaigning on Saturday, October 6, at Pawtucket, R. I. But one game is scheduled for this date, but the following day – Sunday – of the teams with the exception of J & P Coats will be seen in action
In arranging the opening clash the moguls acted wisely in pitting the National Giants, of New York – formerly the Paterson Club – winners of the national title, and J & P Coats, the American Soccer League champions. All eyes of the soccer world will be turned to this game. A casual survey of the personnel of the various clubs reveals that the Giants will sport a brand new team and include old country players with excellent reputations who are expected to play an important part in this season's championship.
The Coats management has retained practically all of its last seasons championship team with the exception of Jock Ferguson, who has returned to Bethlehem, and Fred Morley, who has been transferred to the Fall River team. The Giants will tackle the Fall River team, at Fall River on October 7 and will play its first home game on October 21, when the Bethlehem team will be the visitors at the Polo Grounds in New York.
Hugby Magee's New York team will tackle the Newark team on October 7 in its initial league game of the season, while the Brooklyn Wanderers will open their home at Sterling Street and Nostrand Avenue in Brooklyn on the same date when they lineup against the Bethlehem Steel eleven. All of the teams of the American Soccer League circuit will show many changes and there will be many old favorites missing from the lineups.
The Giants are not expected to use more than three of last year's Paterson side and the Fall River and Bethlehem teams will sport a dozen stars from Canada and Scotland. The New York management will make but two changes from last year's selection, Cushley and McGuire taking the place of Hardy and Phillips. The Brooklyn side will sport a famous amateur internationalist from the Corinthian, of England, besides including players who have occupied positions on some of Scotland's famous league elevens.
The Philadelphia club will show a team that will be 100 percent stronger than last season and there are many soccer critics of the William Penn City who claim the Phillies will make all the others travel some to collect points at their expense. The Philadelphia team will play all the home games at the Philadelphia National Baseball Park. The schedule for the first part of the season follows:
