With the possibility of hitting the road shortly when weekend twin bills will be the lot of the Steelmen it becomes even more imperative that the Steelmen make the most of their games at home and with this in mind every effort will be made to round some of the crippled players into shape in order to present the strongest club possible.
While Pawtucket is not located in any commanding position in the club standing, nevertheless, the invading clan has been rejuvenated by the inclusion of some new talent, most important of which was the transfer of Malcolm Goldie and Findlay Kerr, former Bethlehem favorites, who left Fall River for the Rhode Island club. Nat Tate, a big and powerful fullback, is also a former Marksman who added much strength to the defensive works of the Pawtucket eleven.
The Tuesday training disclosed that Bethlehem players are in fairly good shape and will be fit for the hard game expected on Saturday afternoon. With Archie Stark hobbling around seemingly little the worse for his injury, it is quite likely that he will be seen in his regular berth at center forward.
The return of Stark means that the Bethlehem forward line will not only be intact but that the goal scoring possibilities will undoubtedly be increased. With the speedy Gillespie at right wing forward, paired off with the artistic Johnny Jaap at inside and Massie and Purgavie on the left side, the forward line will be a veteran combination with capable reserves available if an emergency arises.
Impressed with the brilliant display of McGregor and Finlayson as fullbacks, it is practically certain that these two players will again perform in those roles. There doesn't seem to be a chance of either of the three regulars, Allan, Gibson or McDonald, resuming for their injures are slow in responding to treatment.
Even with McGregor and Finlayson lost as halfbacks this department will be seriously crippled for Carnihan and Reid are two veterans while Pitt, a recent acquisition acquired from New Bedford gave promise in his first game against his former teammates last Saturday, of nicely fitting in with this combination. Johnny Rollo was in uniform last Saturday ready for reserve duty but his services were not needed. The extra week rest undoubtedly did the clever little utility man a lot of good and if Pitt fails in the job against Pawtucket, Rollo could be used in his stead.
But one team in the league has thus far escaped the sting of defeat. This is Fall River, held to a draw in two of the four games played, and leading the circuit. New Bedford, tied for the league lead on its invasion here last Saturday was dropped to third position by virtue of the defeat at the hands of Bethlehem and a draw game against Hakoah in New York on Sunday.
