With New Bedford losing two games and Providence drawing in a like number the race in the American Soccer League became tighter among the contenders for the circuit honors with Bethlehem Steel and Boston profiting by their victories over the weekend.
New Bedford, in second position, was dropped from its lofty pedestal and is now tied with Bethlehem for fourth place. The New Englanders weekend campaigning was disastrous in that besides the two defeats the clubs lost he services of Montgomery, their brilliant center half, and McLeavy, a forward, who will be out of the game for several weeks. Montgomery was injured in a collision with Allan at Bethlehem when he scored one of the two goals registered by New Bedford in the Bethlehem game. McLeary sustained an injured ankle when tackled by Berryman.
Fall River continues to ride high at the top of the league standing with Providence in second position. However, the Whalers are but one point ahead of Boston and only two ahead of Bethlehem and New Bedford.
While the point system gives Bethlehem a tie for fourth position a percentage rating would have the local clan in second place. Both Providence and Boston, topping Bethlehem in the race, have played two more games than the Steel Workers. The standing of the league to date follows:
