EXPECT BIG ATTENDANCE
With a machine comprising the same players who were brilliant in their triumph over Hakoah in New York last Sunday afternoon, the homesters in resuming hostilities will strive for another impressive win over the National cup champions of last season.
The sensational stride of the Bethlehem team in its recent games has created no little excitement among soccer fans and with favorable weather the record crowd of the season is expected. In a rolling up the high total of thirteen goals in two games the Steelmen established a feat no other major club has yet achieved and a new record for the Atlantic Coast League.
In spite of the two hard games played over the weekend, games in which the Giants were humiliated by a 9 to 2 defeat and Hakoah stung to the tune of 4 to 0, the players came through in excellent condition and not a single one was missing for the training session yesterday afternoon. Johnny Jaap, the fire brand of the Bethlehem front line, who returned for these games after a prolonged absence due to injury was wisely relieved in the Hakoah game when Bethlehem had the contest well sewed up. He appeared none the worse after hard going and will be at his accustomed position for the resumption against Hakoah.
In fact the forward line with Gillespie at outside right; Stark, center forward, and Massie and Dick on the left side, will be identically the same lineup as for the last two games.
Archie Stark, who season after season, was listed among the leading goal scorers in league competition, was way down the list prior to the last weekend but is now up in a contending position. Stark's five goals against the New York Giants gave his stocks a big boost, and his many admirers are confident that if not retarded by injury, it will not be many more games before he assumes the lead.
The work of Bob McGregor and Bill Finlayson at fullback has inspired no little favorable comment for this pair of halfbacks, pinch hitting in an emergency, are proving a duo of sturdy and hard kicking defenders and it is doubtful if the department could be improved upon by the acquisition of new men.
Announcement was made today that a slight change has been made in the listing of games for Saturday and as a result Bethlehem will meet Bridgeport, a newcomer to the league, instead of New Bedford as originally understood. The Bridgeport club is virtually the Hungaria F. C. of the Eastern League, a team recruited by Andy Stevens, big league star.
