A Swing Along Athletic Row

Soccer Lid Off Tomorrow
After the lapse of several months during which soccer activities were suspended devotees of the dribbling sport will come into their own tomorrow afternoon when the lid is pried off the 1924 season. Bethlehem Steel launches its official start in the circuit campaign with a game on the home lot against the Philadelphia F. C. The date of opening is the earliest in the history of the sport in this city and incidentally the season will be extended later into the spring than usual. This is necessitated by the addition of four new clubs to the American Soccer League, making it a twelve club circuit. It is possible that after the game on Saturday the Steel Workers will do most of their early season campaigning on foreign loam. Such a schedule is usually arranged to avoid conflict with the extensive football program carried out in Bethlehem and in general throughout the Lehigh Valley. With this understanding soccer devotees should not miss the opportunity of seeing the home town representatives inaugurate their start in the strongest professional soccer in the country.

New Talent in Local Lineup
Each season sees soccer players come and go and this season promises to be no exception insofar as the Steel Workers are concerned. Last year it was the celebrated Jackson brothers, Walter and Alec, who came to Bethlehem heralded as the greatest forwards in the business. The team will be conspicuous by their absence this year since both elected to return to Scotland where they are associated with the Aberdeen Club, a first division Scottish League team. However, equally as conspicuous this year will be the presence of Archie Stark, formerly star forward with the New York F. C. who comes to Bethlehem recognized as the leading goal scorer in the American Soccer League last season. In negotiation for Stark and arranging amicably for his transfer to the local club, the Bethlehem management manipulated about the neatest off-season strategy of the year. Stark is a valuable man since he is equally as effective at center and inside right. He will make his bow in a Bethlehem uniform at one of these two positions in the game tomorrow afternoon. While no official announcement has been made it is rumored that before very long the Steel Workers will be augmented by two or three other soccer celebrities.
