Surprises were in order on the first games of the season played in the American Soccer League, most glaring of which probably was the clean cut victory Springfield scored over Fall River, defeating the league champions by the score of 3 to 1. Springfield is the only new club in the league this year, succeeding the vacancy caused by the withdrawal of Shawsheen.

Bethlehem Steel, one of the two clubs in the league scheduled for a single game over the weekend, ran true to form and came through in their tilt against Newark with the victory expected. The Steel Workers scored enough goals to prove their superiority in that game. The first home league games will be played next Saturday. The standing of the clubs follows:
