Picking the right players at the right time, especially on the forward line, positions in which the club is well fortified with talent, is the problem confronting the Bethlehem Steel F. C. management in field their club for games. This was again apparent this week when on the eve of their big clash with Providence F. C., which takes place on the Bethlehem Steel field on Saturday afternoon. Doubt was expressed in the choice for two positions.
The outside right position seems to be the main contention. Georgie Forrest has been going great since the start of the season and to date has been the choice in the majority of the games. His rival for the position is Johnny Jaap, obtained from the Pittsburgh district and a recent acquisition to the club. Jaap made his first appearance in a Steel Workers' uniform against Brooklyn last Sunday afternoon and strongly impressed. Jaap is not entirely a stranger to the Bethlehem club. Several years ago he was on the roster but remained only for a brief spell.
While Rollo will more than likely get the call for inside left, pairing off with Goldie on the outside wing, Arthur Robertson was also considered for the berth. The choice in this position will probably hinge on the field and weather conditions at the time the clubs take the field.
As for the remainder of the makeup of the club the management will stand pat on its previous lineups. The halfback line will see that celebrated trio of McDonald, Carnihan and MacGregor, while for the backs, Davy Ferguson, displaying some of his old-time form, will be paired with Allan, the newcomer to the club, who gave a great defensive display on the two-game trip over the last weekend. Dave Carson will bet he custodian in goal.
In Providence the Steel Workers will find a club much of the type of the New York Giants, the latter the only team to take the measure of Bethlehem thus far this season. Providence has mixed aggressiveness with fast and clever football and is a soccer machine that will be working hard to penetrate the Bethlehem net every minute of the game.
Probably starring for the Whalers will be "Happy" Abdullah, the swarthy son of Egypt, who is big and husky and knows every angle of football. Abdullah will be seen on the visitors' forward line together with such celebrities as Renfrew, Auld, Florie and Adair.
The probable lineup of the clubs will be:
Bethlehem -- Providence
Carson -- G -- Surgener
D. Ferguson -- RFB -- Abel
Allan -- LFB -- Carrot
McDonald -- RHB -- Dick
Carnihan -- CHB -- Izatt
MacGregor -- LHB - -McAuley
Forrest or Jaap -- OR -- Adair
Granger -- IR -- Abdullah
Stark -- CF -- Renfrew
Rollo -- IL -- Auld
Goldie -- OL -- Florie
Kickoff, 3 p.m. Referee, Cutts.
