The Bethlehem Steel Soccer team will make a determined bid to recover some of the points lost thus far in the American Soccer League race when on the home field on Saturday afternoon the Steel Workers tackle the Brooklyn Wanderers.
Realizing that the Brooklynites have displayed a greater strength in games away from home and that the team will be dangerous every minute of the game, the Steel Workers are prepared for one of the hardest tilts of the season.
With Johnny Granger and Johnny Rollo, both inside forwards, on the casualty list, several drastic changes were necessary on the forward line and new players will be seen in every position with the exception of those of the two mainstays on the front line -- Archie Stark, at center forward, and Malcolm Goldie, at outside left.
Following the big midweek practice the management practically decided on the team the club will field for the game and gave preference to Jim Purvis and Johnny Jaap, for the right wing. Arthur Robertson, one of the most versatile players on the squad who can fill in in emergency on either the halfback or forward line, will be injected in the berth vacated by the injury to Rollo.
This position is not strange to Robertson, who last year after Goldie was injured at Fall River played the outside left position and played it well. One other change has been decided on in the lineup and that will see "Bill" Highfield, the elongated goalie, as custodian in his first league game of the season. Both Carson, the regular goalie, and Georgie Forrest, will be laid up for a rest.
With Bethlehem jostled from the top position to fourth in the league standing over the last weekend unusual interest is manifest in the game. The race has reached the stage where points cannot be lost without damage if the team intends to continue as a contender for the league honors. A defeat for Bethlehem at the hands of Brooklyn would just about push the Steel Workers out of the running for a good long time and fully realizing this the spectators can expect to see the Bethlehem clan give their best against Brooklyn. The probable lineup will be:
Bethlehem -- Brooklyn F. C.
Highfield -- G -- Smith
D. Ferguson -- RFB -- Robertson
Allen -- LFB -- McMilan
McDonald -- RHB -- Gilchrist
Carnihan -- CHB -- McManus
MacGregor -- LHB -- Herd
Jaap -- OR -- Hogg
Purvis -- IR -- Curtis
Stark -- CF -- Nelson
Robertson -- IL -- Gray
Goldie -- OL -- Yule
Kickoff at 3 p.m.
