George Healey of Detroit, national president, has issued a call for the tenth annual meeting of the United States Football (Soccer) Association to be held May 21-24, at Cleveland, with convention headquarters at the Hotel Winton. National Secretary Thomas W. Cahill has just notified state and district soccer governing bodies of the meeting place and dates.
Numerous matters of great importance to the future of the game in this country will be delved into by the soccer legislators this year at Cleveland. Outstanding among these will be formulation of plans for selection, direction and financing of the first American Olympic soccer team, which is to go into the Paris Olympiad in 1924; broadening of the scope and rule-making for the National Amateur Challenge Cup competition, introduced this season, and planning for the acquisition of soccer parks of adequate facilities and capacity in all soccer centers at present lacking proper parks. In this last named connection strong efforts to utilize major league baseball parks generally for soccer during the winter months are to be made.
In the final of the annual national soccer championships, the National Challenge Cup Competition, conducted by the U. S. F. A. which is to be played tomorrow at Harrison, N. J., in the Newark International League ball park, will clash the present national champions, the Scullin Steel F. C., of St. Louis, and Paterson Football Club, 1922-23 western and eastern champions, respectively. J. B. Stark of Detroit is the referee.
Curiously enough, the game tomorrow will be the third meeting in national finals in successive years of practically the same group of players. For all three consecutive season in which the Scullins have been national cup finalists, the team has been held virtually intact.
