When Bethlehem launches the home soccer season against Newark on Lehigh Field on Labor Day afternoon, the importance of winning home games will be stressed, since the American League cup champions did not seemingly get the best of the breaks in the arrangement of the schedule. In fact, the campaigning for Bethlehem and Boston promises to be far more grueling than any other teams in the circuit.
In analyzing the league schedule for the first half, it is found that the number of double headers assigned have been fairly uniform, but the disadvantages as between playing fresh teams on both days, or meeting upon the second day a club that was also engaged the previous day are very pronounced. In this respect Bethlehem and Boston suffer equally, and are at a considerable disadvantage; Brooklyn, Coats, Fall River, Giants and New York Nationals are at considerable advantage, while Newark New Bedford and Providence are in a neutral position.
It is appreciated that the arrangement of the schedule is governed entirely by an economic standpoint, which must be duly considered, but it does seem strange that Bethlehem and Boston should be placed at such a disadvantage. There is little likelihood that the advantages will be reversed in the second half, because during that period the league executives will be subjected not only to the usual conditions, which are prevalent also in the first half, but also to climatic and cup tie complications. It would have been in more fairness to have made the double header distribution somewhat more equitable in the first half.
Another inequitable condition is that certain clubs are playing 13 home games, while others are scheduled for fourteen. And many championships are determined upon the result of one game. Appended is a tabulation of the analysis, both as to double headers (in which is also shown the number of double headers in which one of the teams is playing both games against fresh teams and vice versa) and also total number of home and away games of each club.
